… ‘Welcome back our one and only Chief Whip’ – Senate
Former governor of Abia state, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu is currently the Chief Whip of the Senate. He was however away and kept behind bars for six months.
Kalu was jailed for 12 years on December 5, 2019, after he was convicted and found guilty of N7.1bn fraud along with his firm, Slok Nigeria Limited, and a former Director of Finance at the Abia state Government House, Jones Udeogu.
The Supreme Court however last month precisely, May 8 nullified his conviction.
A seven-member panel of the apex court in a unanimous verdict delivered by Justice Ejembi Eko declared that Justice Mohammed Idris, who convicted the senator and Udeogu was already a justice of the Court of Appeal when he ruled and sentenced Kalu and his co-defendant.
A great reprieve came the way of Kalu on Tuesday, June 2nd when Justice Mohammed Liman of the Federal High Court, Lagos asked the Nigeria Correctional Service, NCS, to release him.
It was a development that gave Kalu the opportunity to regain freedom after six months.
Senator Orji Kalu, who registered presence and joined his colleagues at a plenary session on Tuesday, June 9, 2020, later took to twitter to send innuendos which many believed was meant for a chieftain of the ruling APC.
Kalu had on the day he was sentenced asserted that getting him convicted was politics-infused and that it was all about 2023 presidential election.
‘By the grace of Almighty God, I resumed my normal legislative duties & I remain committed. I encourage us all be thankful in every circumstance of our lives. Let me conclude in the language of the good people of the Southwest by saying ‘Ati lo ati de’, he wrote on Twitter on Wednesday.
