… Babangida Authorised The Statement Before It Was Issued – Afegbua
The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has ordered the arrest of Kassim Afegbua for the statement he issued on behalf of former President Ibrahim Babangida, NEWSBREAKng has learnt.
Afegbua is the Chief Press Secretary to the former military President Babangida.
A source in the Presidency confirmed to this medium few hours after the statement was issued and went viral on Sunday.
Recall that Afegbua, in the statement allegedly issued on behalf of Babangida, quoted him as saying that President Muhammadu Buhari should not seek for re-election in 2019.
However in a swift reaction, the former Military President denied issuing a statement calling on Nigerians to disregard the earlier statement by Afegbua.
According to the source, “the IGP has ordered for the arrest of Kassim Afegbua for issuing a fake statement. He was advised to submit himself to the Force Headquarters in 24 hours or face arrest.”
Meanwhile, Afegbua had said that the statement he issued earlier on Sunday was endorsed by Babangida, during his appearance as a guest on Channels Television Programme Sunday Politics.
He claimed that as a professional who has been on the job for 13 years, he has never gotten a rebuttal after releasing a statement on behalf of the former president.
“I have been doing this job for 13 years now. I have never issued a statement on behalf of General Babangida and it gets a rebuttal.
“I extracted a commitment from him (Babangida) before I issued that statement. The former military president authorised the statement I issued. I didn’t just put out the statement on my own,” he said.
